The Mercury Dime was designed by Adolf A. Weinman. His allegorical representation of the Greek god Mercury was to symbolize "Liberty" was loved by the collectors of the day. The wings on her cap were supposed to represent "Liberty of Thought." The reverse depicts a fasces with an olive branch behind it. The 1916-D is the "key" date of the series, with a mintage of only 264,000 pieces. Another pair of interesting varieties are the 1942/1 and 1942/1-D. Both of these overdates are highly sought by collectors and dealers.

In 1948, Dr. William Sheldon, a renowned numismatist, developed the Sheldon Scale, assigning grades from "1" through "70" to coins. The basis of Sheldon’s theory was that a "70" would be worth 70 times as much as a "1."
PCGS built its grading standards upon the Sheldon Scale when it introduced the concept of encapsulated, third-party grading in 1986.  To understand more about grading of a coin go to https://www.pcgs.com/grades.
